The dangers of drowsy driving

Getting behind the wheel is something many Americans do every day without giving it much thought. Whether commuting to work or running errands, most drivers expect to reach their destinations safely.

However, not every driving hazard is as obvious as speeding or distracted driving. Sometimes one of the greatest dangers comes from something many people overlook – fatigue.

When fatigue becomes a serious hazard

Most people can recognize that alcohol and drugs impair a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. What is less widely understood is that extreme fatigue can affect the brain and body in many of the same ways. A drowsy driver may experience slower reaction times, reduced concentration and impaired judgment, making it more difficult to respond to changing road conditions.

Sleep deprivation can also increase the risk of dangerous driving behaviors. A tired driver may drift between lanes, miss traffic signals or fail to notice hazards until it is too late to avoid a collision. In some cases, drivers may even experience brief episodes of sleep lasting only a few seconds, commonly known as microsleeps. During an episode, a person may seem to be awake, but their brain fails to process information. At highway speeds, even a few seconds of inattention can have devastating consequences.

Certain patterns appear in many fatigue-related crashes. Sleepiness can affect drivers at any time, but drowsy-driving collisions occur most often between midnight and 6 a.m. or during the late afternoon, when natural dips in the body’s internal clock can increase feelings of tiredness. These crashes frequently involve a single vehicle leaving the roadway at a high rate of speed without evidence of braking, suggesting the driver may have fallen asleep or failed to react in time. They are also more likely to occur on rural roads and highways, where long stretches of driving can contribute to fatigue and reduced alertness.

When a collision occurs because a driver was too fatigued to operate a vehicle safely, injured individuals can face medical expenses, lost income and other unexpected challenges. Speaking with an experienced legal professional can help you better understand your options and determine what steps may be available to protect your interests.
