Tips to avoid pedestrian accidents

When the weather gets warm, and the sun shines, more people decide to walk to their destination. This is great for their health and the environment; however, it can increase the risk of pedestrian accidents.

Unfortunately, if you are struck by a motor vehicle as a pedestrian, injuries can be devastating. Because of this, it’s imperative that you know what you can do to keep yourself safe.

Stick to the sidewalk

One of the best ways to stay safe is by sticking to the sidewalks (when available). Only walk on the side of the road when there’s no other option. If you walk on the road, make sure you face traffic and always remain aware.

Avoid distractions

Just like drivers, pedestrians can be distracted, too. If you look at your phone, listen to music, or even talk to someone while you walk, you may not see a safety hazard. Along with being struck by a vehicle, issues like uneven sidewalks, holes and debris can cause trips and falls, which can also cause serious injuries. Because of this, it’s best to stay aware of your surroundings and always avoid distractions.

Wear visible clothing

Making sure you are visible is key to staying safe and avoiding an accident and injury. The more visible you are, the less likely you are to be hit.

Know your legal rights

If you are injured in an accident as a pedestrian caused by the neglect or reckless action of another person or entity, you may be able to recover compensation. Be sure to explore your legal options to recoup your losses.
