As a father, one thing you might worry about is that the court will have an unconscious bias toward giving the mother of your children custody. The reality is that there is not supposed to be a bias of any kind, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t. The good news is that you can take steps to make yourself stand out as a great father in court, helping your case for custody.

With these three tips, you can show that you’re invested in your child and want to see him or her succeed and be healthy. Here are three things to remember to do:

1. Build a strong relationship

A good relationship with your child is one of the best things you can show to the court. A child who loves to see you and wants to be with you shows the court immediately that you’re a good person with your child’s best interests at heart.

2. Keep accurate records

If you’re fighting for custody, keep records of what you do for and with your child. Maintain records of custody and visitation, submit a parenting plan, take photos and keep receipts. Having this information will help you address any questions the court has.

3. Go to important events

Finally, get witnesses. You need to show up at school events and activities, take your child to extracurricular activities and be present in his or her life. It always helps to have others who can say they see you being a great dad to your kids.

Fathers also deserve time with their children. These tips can help fathers get custody and spend time with their kids.
