After divorce, go to your child’s events

Post-divorce life is bound to be different for your children. No matter what your custody plan looks like, things are going to change. Relationships are going to shift. There’s just no way around this.

The key is to focus on giving your child the attention and love they deserve, no matter how often you see them. One crucial way you can do this is to make sure that you always go to the events that they are involved in.

These could vary dramatically depending on what your child is interested in. It could be a basketball game, school play, concert or science fair.

The type of event is unimportant. What is important is that the event matters to your child. It’s a big part of their life. They put time and effort into preparing for it. They want to show off for you, and they want you to see what they’ve accomplished.

It’s often difficult for parents to make it to all of their kids’ events. They have work and other obligations. Moreover, after a divorce, they may have a complicated relationship with their co-parent. However, difficult or not, parents need to make their children a priority. The kids need to see that they are important, that their parents care about their lives and what they’re doing, and that they matter. That’s especially true when their parents are no longer together and they may be seeing one parent less than the other.

As you set up your parenting plan, keep this goal in mind and find out how your plan can make it possible to be there for all of your children’s events.
