3 main types of driver distraction

On Behalf of | Feb 20, 2026 | Car Accidents |

Driving distractions are a very common problem in the United States. Every day, car accidents happen because a driver simply was not paying enough attention, and other drivers or passengers can suffer injuries.

You can often find specific examples like texting and driving or talking to passengers. But it is also helpful to look at the overall categories of distracted driving, rather than specific events, to understand how and why it is such a big problem.

Visual distractions

First and foremost, many drivers get distracted when they take their eyes off of the road. A driver who is turning to look at their passenger or looking down at the screen of their cellphone cannot see traffic changes ahead of them. This can lead to people striking pedestrians in a crosswalk, running a stop sign and much more.

Physical distractions

Additionally, a driver is not fully in control of their car unless they have two hands on the steering wheel. But many people engage in other activities, like drinking coffee or doing personal grooming on the way to work. These physical distractions could cause them to lose control or react slowly in an emergency.

Mental distractions

Finally, some drivers are just cognitively distracted, such as someone who is daydreaming or engaging in a phone conversation. Even though they are looking where they are going, they are devoting some of their mental processing power to other tasks, taking their focus away from the road.

All of these types of distracted driving can lead to serious car accidents, and injured parties need to know what rights they have to seek financial compensation.
