Berry hit with big child support payment

Just a few weeks before Connecticut residents are set to watch Halle Berry's new small screen debut, the Oscar-winning actress was ordered to shell out a hefty payment to her ex-boyfriend. The case only involved child support issues and did not address any ongoing custody matters.

The Los Angeles Superior Court ordered Berry to pay $16,000 in child support to her Canadian model ex-boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry for the former couple's 6-year-old daughter. The two met in 2005 and stayed together until 2010. Ever since then, they have been fighting over custody and child support. Aubry and Berry's current husband and father of her 8-month-old son got into a physical alteration during the 2012 holiday season when Aubry was dropping off the former couple's daughter who was four at the time. The former couple was fighting for custody until the spring of 2011 when Berry attempted to relocate to France with her daughter and the child's nanny filed a restraining order against Aubry. Since that point, the two have shared equal custody of the girl.

According to the court documents, the child support order will continue until the girl turns 19 or she graduates from high school. Additionally, Berry will be paying $115,000 retroactively in child support, and she will have to pay her ex-boyfriend another $300,000 to cover the legal fees that he had accumulated since the start of the custody battle. Berry will be responsible for her daughter's tuition cost and both parents will split health care costs. The order was entered after the two reached a settlement.

While most parents do not have the financial resources of Halle Berry, custodial parents are generally entitled to financial assistance from noncustodial parents. The amount that they pay is usually determined by a child support formula that takes into account the relative earning capacity of each parent and other factors.
