Eliot Spitzer may pay out millions in divorce

Connecticut viewers who watched the announcement in 2008 that Eliot Spitzer was patronizing a high-priced call girl ring were probably more surprised that his wife decided to stand by him then than they are now that the couple has announced their divorce. However, life after the couple’s high-asset divorce might be just fine for the former governor’s wife, Silda, who stands to receive millions.

The couple met when they were attending Harvard, and they were married in 1987. They had three daughters, but they are all adults now. Although Spitzer resigned as governor in 2008 after admitting to his involvement with the call girl ring, the couple stayed together until announcing their divorce in January 2014. The terms of their divorce will be dictated by a postnuptial agreement that the couple signed at some point after they were married.

According to the legal documents procured by media outlets, the total amount that Silda Spitzer will receive will be $7.5 million after taxes. Her lifestyle will not change dramatically as she will be able to retain a housekeeper. She will have access to additional funds to pay for living expenses and health coverage. She will also be keeping the couple’s apartment in New York City. Additionally, she will receive an annual spousal maintenance award of $240,000. The award will be permanent unless she is remarried. She will receive additional funds that she will give to charity, up to $100,000 per year.

Individuals who are going through divorce may discuss their options with a legal consultant. A lawyer may review the terms of a prenuptial agreement or postnuptial agreement in order to inform the client about these provisions.
