Jared Fogle and wife finalize divorce

Just days before Jared Fogle was sentenced to 15 years in prison, his divorce from his wife of five years was finalized. His wife had filed for divorce a few hours after he agreed to a guilty plea on one count of receiving and distributing child pornography and traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

Currently, there are about 30 pages of the divorce proceedings available to the public. Those show that in September, his wife’s attorney filed paperwork with the court to contest the former Subway pitchman’s request that he see his two kids.

His now ex-wife’s filing said that Fogle traveled too much to have a large role in his children’s daily lives — even before he became the focus of the criminal investigation. In addition, she said she left the state on a planned trip with the children and decided to stay there in order to avoid the “self-inflicted media circus” that his criminal actions created.

There are no financial details available in the court records and Fogle’s attorney said that there would be no comment from his client on the divorce.

Divorce is difficult when it doesn’t make the news. However, when criminal charges are involved and include someone who is well known, divorce can be exceptionally brutal. The children are often the ones who suffer the most, and it can cause them emotional problems for a long time.

If you are contemplating divorce and you have children, it is wise to speak with your divorce attorney about recommendations for therapy. This can help everyone involved begin to move on.
