Former owner of Dodgers wants women financially empowered

There are three pieces of advice that Jamie McCourt, the former chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Dodgers, wants every woman to have when it comes to being financially literate. First, she says that you must learn how to be self-sufficient. Second, you need to know what you want when it comes to controlling a conversation during divorce. Third, use your best skills to get what you want.

McCourt, who divorced in 2011 with a $131 million divorce settlement, said that she made many mistakes during her divorce. Now, however, she knows how to help other women. She wants them to be aware of their finances. Her mistake, according to ESPN.com, was that she was misled about how much the Dodgers were worth. Her ex sold the team after the divorce was final for $2 billion. She believes she was shorted $770 million when she claims her ex-husband of 32 years misrepresented how much the team was worth. She took him back to court, but the judge ruled against her.

As a result, she says that women have to have their own lawyer and accountant. Know where the money is and how to invest it. While she said it’s not romantic to ask your spouse about your financial situation, she said, “Marriage is big business…. It’s business and it’s romantic business, but it’s business, so understand the business. I mean, it’s a contract.”

It’s good advice to know the ins and outs to your financial situation while married and during divorce. This can help ensure that you receive what you deserve.
