The value of routine for children

When determining how you want to set up your child custody schedule, it's important to consider what you can do to build a solid routine for your kids. It's very important to them. If they don't get it, they can feel anxious and unsettled.

According to mental health professionals, children tend to feel more anxious in the summer. You would think that the freedom from school would be relaxing and fun, and it can be at times. However, researchers have actually found that anxiety spikes for a lot of children when school lets out for the year.

The reasons for this vary from child to child, but a lot of it has to do with a lack of routine. They don't go to school for months. They may have to spend time with a babysitter if their parents work. They may need to go to camp, which, while exciting and fun, also breaks up the normal flow of life. They may be headed off for vacations or weekends with friends. That can disrupt their general routine and their sleep schedules.

As an adult, it's easy to imagine that children have low stress levels and don't have to deal with much pressure. However, the very things that may seem so stress-free for adults could actually make kids feel out of place and concerned.

It's important to take this into account when setting up a child custody schedule with your co-parent during your divorce. It's important to learn what you can do to put the kids first and make life easier for them.
