Is it proper for a man to seek alimony?

In a word, the answer to this question is yes. Many people divorcing in Connecticut still do not have a clear idea of alimony's true purpose. It is not a source of free money; it is a system of financial support for ex-spouses. It does not matter if you are male or female, if you need alimony, it is proper to seek it during the divorce process.

Unfortunately, many men in the Hartford region let their pride get in the way of seeking spousal support. Perhaps it will help to know that across the nation, more and more women are paying their ex-husbands alimony. In the modern world, it is not uncommon for a wife to enjoy a more lucrative career than her husband does. As such, it is becoming commonplace for these successful women to help their ex-husbands become financially stable with support payments after divorce.

Further, the role reversals enjoyed by many modern couples have made alimony a viable option for men. For example, say a wife works outside the home while her husband stays at home to care for the children. If the couple decides to divorce and the husband has no income or a limited income, receiving spousal support until he gets on his feet is logical.

Courts across the country are recognizing that the men of today often need alimony to become productive citizens. If you are divorcing with a low or absent income, talk to an attorney about your alimony options. If you choose not to take this step, you could find yourself struggling to survive in the wake of your divorce.
